In this feature interview we talk to inmate Ryan Jordan about systemic racism, racial discrimination, racial divides between administration and inmates and a racial division between who gets privileges and who gets punishments within Canada’s “Correctional Institutions”. Incarcerated since 2003, Jordan speaks from his experiences as a grievance clerk for other prisoners, as well as from his own experiences launching a number of legal challenges against the prison system and its administrators, the most recent of which in April 2014 was concluded in his favour at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

Ryan Jordan is currently serving a life sentence and is currently institutionalized at Collins Bay minimum security

Implications of the Supreme Court Ruling on Canada’s Prostitution Laws (RADIO BASICS INTERVIEWS) /implications-of-the-supreme-court-ruling-on-canadas-prostitution-laws/ /implications-of-the-supreme-court-ruling-on-canadas-prostitution-laws/#respond Sat, 28 Dec 2013 06:16:03 +0000 /?p=7533 ...]]> RB ButtonOn this edition of Radio Basics, we explore Canada’s Supreme Court ruling this December 2013 that struck down Canada’s laws around prostitution.

We interview two long-time organizers around the issue, whose positions though not necessarily contradictory somewhat reflect the long-standing debate between those pushing for “decriminalization” and those advocating “abolition”.  We speak to Chanelle Gallant from Maggie’s-Toronto, a Toronto-based sex workers action project; and Suzanne Baustad, co-founder of  Grassroots Women – an anti-imperialist women’s group that was active in Vancouver between 1995 and 2010 and worked to address the systemic marginalization of working class women. Baustad also wrote in to BASICSNews.ca with an Op-Ed that you can read here.

Skip to minute mark 8’38” for the interview with Chanelle Gallant of Maggie’s Toronto. Skip to 21’52” for interview with Suzanne Baustad, formerly of Grassroots Women in Vancouver.

After a decade of ‘drop fees’ rhetoric and little tangible successes in rising tuition feeds – a failure that contrasts sharply with the militancy of Quebec students and their relative successes – are students in Canada ready to break from the CFS?

In this show we reflect on Sept. 11th and how imperialism has used it to propel war on the people around the Globe.

In our feature interview, we focus on the ‘Defederation Campaign’ and how and why students are organizing to defederate from the Canadian Federation of Student. Through our conversation with Ashleigh Ingle, Ontario Spokesperson, we explore why.
