Canada Denies Entry to Venezuelan Parliamentarian

Government criticized for hypocrisy, imperialist attitude

QUEBEC – The Canadian government has refused entry to a Venezuelan parliamentarian who was scheduled to participate in a United Nations conference in Quebec, citing his past as a member of a guerrilla organization. The parliamentarian for the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) and ex-President of the National Assembly (AN), Fernando Soto Rojas was informed by the Canadian Ambassador in Venezuela that he was on a “red list” in Canada for his participation in a guerrilla group in the ‘60s.

Soto Rojas was scheduled to participate as part of a delegation of 5 members (4 of the ruling party and 1 opposition member) at the meeting of the Group of Latin America and the Caribbean to the United Nations (GRULAC) this past weekend in Quebec. GRULAC is a non-binding group which brings together 33 member countries of the Organization of United Nations (UN) in the Americas.

The new President of GRULAC, Ecuadorian National Assembly President Fernando Cordero, was quick in his rejection of what he described as an action motivated by political and ideological reasons. Since the beginning of the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela in 1998, Canada has maintained positions critical of the process and the government of Hugo Chavez Frias, even financing opposition groups.

Cordero said the Canada’s actions violate the agreement signed between the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and each of the participating countries.

According to the Venezuelan newspaper Correo del Orinoco, these measures by the Canadian Government generated solidarity for Venezuela by most of the leaders involved in the GRULAC meeting.

The representative of the Avanzada Bolivariana campaign and member of the PSUV in Canada, Nery Quintero, denounced these actions by the Canadian Government as a “lack of respect for the institutions and the sovereignty of the Venezuelan people.”

Vice-President of the Canadian Chapter of the International League of People’s Struggle (ILPS) Steve da Silva, also denounced the Canadian government. “While the Canadian government is openly supporting and enabling the financing of its allied groups in Syria and Libya in the last year, it denies entry to a true servant and representative of the Venezuelan people,” said da Silva. “The facade of neutrality is disappearing from the Canadian government and revealing its true colors as imperialist hypocrits.”

Last year, Canada denied entry to former British parliamentarian George Galloway, citing his purported support of the Palestinian group Hamas, which was elected to represent the Palestinian people. This decision drew international headlines and was eventually struck down by a Canadian court decision.

This November, the Canadian chapter of ILPS is organizing a major conference in Toronto under the slogan of “Right to Exist, Right to Resist.” Organizers have their fingers crossed that their major keynote speakers will be allowed across the border – Palestinian leader Leila Khaled and American revolutionary rapper M-1 of Dead Prez, among a growing and impressive list of major figures (Jan Myrdal, Maria Augusta Calle, and more still to be announced).

Canada Niega Entrada a Diputado Venezolano

País norteamericano criticado por hipocresía, actitud imperialista

QUEBEC – El gobierno canadiense ha negado la entrada a un parlamentario venezolano que estaba programado participar en una conferencia de las Naciones Unidas en Quebec, citando su pasado de ser comandante guerrillero. El diputado del Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV) y ex-Presidente de la Asamblea Nacional (AN), Fernando Soto Rojas fue informado por parte del Embajador canadiense en Venezuela que está en la “lista roja” de Canadá por su participación en un grupo guerrillero en los años 60.

Soto Rojas estaba programado participar en la delegación de 5 diputados (4 del oficialismo y 1 de la oposición) en la reunión del Grupo de América Latina y el Caribe ante las Naciones Unidas (GRULAC) este pasado fin de semana en Quebec. GRULAC es un grupo de diálogo no vinculante que reúne a 33 países miembros de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) en el continente Americano.

El nuevo Presidente de GRULAC, el Asambleísta Ecuatoriano Fernando Cordero, fue rápido en su rechazo
de lo que califico como algo motivado por razones políticas e ideológicas. Desde el inicio de la Revolución Bolivariana en Venezuela en 1998, Canada ha mantenido posiciones criticas de ese proceso y del Gobierno de Hugo Chávez Frías, incluso financiando grupos de oposición.

Cordero aseguró que la actitud Canadá viola el acuerdo firmado entre la Unión Interparlamentaria (UIP) y cada uno de los países.

Según el periódico Venezolano Correo del Orinoco, estas medidas por parte del Gobierno canadiense generaron solidaridad con Venezuela de la mayoría de las y los dirigentes que participan en el encuentro del GRULAC.

La representante de la Avanzada Bolivariana y militante del PSUV en Canada, Nery Quintero, denuncio estas acciones por parte de del Gobierno Canadiense como un “falto de respeto a las instituciones y la soberanía del pueblo Venezolano”.

El Vice-Presidente de la sección Canadiense de la Liga Internacional de Luchas Populares (ILPS), Steve da Silva, también denuncio el gobierno Canadiense. “Mientras que el gobierno Canadiense esta abiertamente apoyando y permitiendo el financiamento de sus grupos aliados en Siria y también en Libia el año pasado, niegan la entrada a un servidor y representante del pueblo Venezolano” dijo da Silva. “La fachada de neutralidad del gobierno canadiense está desapareciendo y revelando su verdadera cara hipócrita e imperialista.”

El año pasado, Canadá negó la entrada al ex parlamentario británico George Galloway, citando su supuesto apoyo declarado por el grupo palestino HAMAS, un grupo que fue elegido para representar al pueblo palestino. Esta decisión fue noticia internacional, y finalmente fue revertidad por una decisión judicial canadiense.

La sección canadiense del ILPS se encuentra organizando una conferencia para el mes que viene, cuyo lema será “Derecho a existir, derecho a resistir”. Aún se espera que se le autorice la entrada a quienes serían los exponentes principales: la líder palestina Leila Khaled y el rapero estadounidense M-1 del grupo Dead Prez, dúo que se destaca por el contenido revolucionario de sus composiciones. Junto con Jan Myrdal y María Augusta Calle, son sólo algunos de las figuras destacadas que se esperan para dicha conferencia.
